Celebrating Authenticity and Weirdness: Insights from Robyn Walker and Sairah Ashman on International Women's Day

March 8, 2024

As I was reading through Robyn Walker and Sairah Ashman's thought-provoking pieces, there was this part of me that felt profoundly understood. Like they were speaking straight to the quirky, mixed-up core of who I am.

Growing up as a half-English, half-Mexican Hindu on a small barefoot island paradise - one of the many that surround Hong Kong Island - I intimately knew what it felt like to exist outside the neat little cultural boxes society tries to stuff us all into. From the all-Chinese kindergarten and primary school my parents sent us to, where I stuck out like a sore thumb, to the international high school where privileged expats and generationally wealthy locals would dismiss me as the "scholarship kid" at first. My reality, however, was a far cry from privilege - an experience that was, in many ways, my first taste of the alienating "otherness" every kid in high school inevitably faces. A story for another time, I suppose.

It didn't take long after high school that I came out of the closet, a little push from a friend who has since passed on - a farewell gift I've since recognized. So instead of suppressing that feeling of being different, I embraced it. Realizing very early on that the world is always going to try to put you in a box, you realize your uniqueness, your beautiful contradictions and idiosyncrasies - that's your real power. And the real challenge is accepting it.

That's likely why Robyn's musings on workplace authenticity hit me so hard. She understands that our true, unvarnished selves - flaws, quirks and all - aren't something to be ashamed of. Rather, they're what allow us to create profound connections and impacts that transcend just assimilating into some corporate, beige-tinted version of acceptability.

And Sairah's insights into the power of leaning into your "weirdness" in branding? Chef's kiss Iconic. Forward-thinking brands unafraid to celebrate their offbeat magic and challenge industry norms - those are the real innovators sparking seismic shifts across landscapes. Simply by being their most authentic, "deliciously" (as my Mexican mum would say to describe a feeling or experience) unconventional selves.

The reality is, in a world determined to commodify our experiences into easily-digestible bites for mass consumption, our idiosyncrasies are a holy act of resistance. They're the proof that we're not products, but richly complex, multi-faceted human beings. Our quirks, contradictions, convoluted journeys - those are the contours that give us soul, texture, resonance.

So let's raise a glass to the beautiful weirdos unafraid to let their colors bleed freely. We who understand that our cracks and rough edges are a form of porousness that allows empathy and wisdom to permeate. That our stories of alienation and hard-won self-acceptance are what give us resilience.

In this tapestry of human experience, may we always celebrate the vital hues and textures each soul brings to the whole. Because it's only by honoring our delicious idiosyncrasies that we can collectively weave something transcendent.
